Privacy Policy for RunRoute

Last updated: February 2025
Effective date: February 2025

RunRoute (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is a route-planning app for iOS. This Privacy Policy describes how we handle information when you use the app. RunRoute is developed by Juan Guerrero.

1. Summary

  • We do not require an account to use RunRoute.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • Location is used only when the app is in use, to show your position on the map and to plan routes.
  • Saved routes are stored only on your device.
  • When you use “Snap to roads” or search, some data may be sent to Apple and to the Open-Elevation service as described below.

2. Information We Collect and How We Use It

2.1 Location (when in use)

  • What: Your device’s location while you use the app (e.g. to show your position on the map).
  • Why: To display your position and to help you plan and follow routes.
  • How long: We do not store your location on any server. Location is used in real time by the app and by Apple’s map services as needed.

2.2 Saved routes (on your device only)

  • What: Routes you create and save (waypoints, snapped path, distance, elevation, and any name you give the route).
  • Why: So you can view and reuse your routes in the app.
  • Where: This data is stored only on your iPhone or iPad (using the device’s local storage). We do not upload or store your routes on our servers.
  • What: When you use the search bar, the text you type and the fact that you are searching may be sent to Apple’s MapKit / Apple Maps to return places and addresses.
  • Why: To provide search and map functionality.
  • Who handles it: Apple. Their privacy policy applies to that data: Apple Privacy Policy.

2.4 Elevation data (“Snap to roads”)

  • What: When you tap “Snap to roads,” the app sends coordinates along your route (latitude and longitude only, no names or identifiers) to the Open-Elevation service to get elevation data.
  • Why: To show elevation gain and the elevation profile for your route.
  • Who handles it: The Open-Elevation API (open-elevation.com). We do not control their servers or their data practices. Only geographic coordinates are sent; we do not send your name, Apple ID, or other account information.

3. Data We Do Not Collect

We do not collect:

  • Name, email, or other account information (the app has no sign-in).
  • Contacts, photos, or other data from your device except as described above.
  • Any data for advertising or analytics beyond what Apple may collect (e.g. through App Store or system services).

4. Third-Party Services

Service Purpose What may be sent
Apple MapKit Maps, search, directions Search queries, map usage
Open-Elevation Elevation for your route Route coordinates only

Each of these services has its own privacy practices. We encourage you to review Apple’s and Open-Elevation’s policies.

5. Data Retention and Deletion

  • Location: Not stored by us; used only during your session.
  • Saved routes: Stored on your device until you delete them in the app or remove the app. We have no copy of this data.
  • Coordinates sent to Open-Elevation: We do not store those on our servers. Open-Elevation’s retention is governed by their own policy.

6. Children’s Privacy

RunRoute is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us and we will work to address it.

7. Your Rights and Choices

  • Location: You can revoke location access at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → RunRoute.
  • Saved routes: You can delete individual routes in the app or remove the app to delete all local data.
  • No account: Because we don’t have user accounts, there is no “account data” we can provide or delete on a server. All stored data is on your device.

If you are in the European Economic Area or another region with specific privacy rights, you may have additional rights (e.g. access, correction, deletion). Contact us using the details below; we will respond in line with applicable law.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy. For material changes, we may provide notice in the app or via the App Store listing.
